Hey

I wrote an article on Zend framework to which i initially opted in choosing a PHP framework. I want to be very careful cos i want to build a large scale application to which the framework i'll choose will be the driving point..

for instance, i must be able to create multiple minisites through the application that i will create using the framework, so far, im opting on yii

but ifever, through the articles i wrote on which i was discouraged using the zend framework (i hate cakephp) maybe i made some silly mistakes that could have been uncovered easily with someone with large experience with zend framework..

kindly let me know if you need any more information about this
looking forward to hear from you soon

kind regards
EL

i simply dont know when i see all these comments

good points: lightness, database queries yes they are the 50% efficiency factor it's true; size of the framework, cakephp is so easy to learn at first but when i see websites build on cake, WO, that's not what I'd want for delivery to a client =]

for instance, i have friends in the office boasting about the frameworks they will be using in the future and not even considering the detrimental factors involved in, for example shifting employees or if one leaves and get replaced by another who's good at php for instance (lets' say normal good) but nenni in the framework considered.. it's like in bourne identity and then everything goes silent, kaboom..

i saw one dude on top mentioning to create one of your own with just the requirements that would fit the requirements specifications of the applications, with clear independence of the MVCs, that is, modules created should be clearly independent of each other, minimum strings attached

documentation.. no one mentioned documentation.. documentation and user manuals are important, the app does not belong to you, it belongs to the company so the company must have a documentation and a user manual for different types of users that will be interacting with it, it's big so the acl is important i guess; that comes along with whatever framework you're using

i guess everyone here must guess im no programmer, im an analyst and that was how i would envisage the best strategy.. even im going through this hard decision and, php being a framework by itself and largely oO, y the need to build another framework when it already is one!?

so my best answer could be (even if I'm getting back on zend framework one more time) to build one of your own, deliver good documentation, comments, and user manuals and inspire on existing frameworks to eliminate weak points and improve on the best

that was my $0.03 :D

It's true about what ppl are saying about Zend.. Although it created PHP, it's not being brilliant in creating a framework, which i understand, cos we cant be good at everything..

can you imagine symfony creating php??? AAAHH, or microsoft??

So I got stuck in this part of the tutorial from the Zend official website itself and apparently from what i see, the Zend framework doesnt have much and I guess it wont even post the comments about the issues i encountered on following it, which is not fairplay at all and which also reflects their professionalism and ways of doing things.. I never knew Zend PHP people to be sort of hypocrites: well, maybe they have a good reason to do so, and I hope it's for their own best..

So here we go..

im sorry but i think it's important for me to say this, but this might sound like spamming, it is not or maybe im doing it wrongly, if so, someone be nice and email me at equatorlounge[at]gmail[dot]com..

i had to manually type in the lines:
resources.frontController.controllerDirectory = APPLICATION_PATH "/controllers"
resources.frontController.params.displayExceptions = 0
resources.layout.layoutPath = APPLICATION_PATH "/layouts/scripts/"

and create the folders layouts/scripts with the layout.phtml inside

i cant believe im the only one going through this cos ive googled like hell and NOT found the error i mentioned in the previous threads ive posted

to note im using xampp-32bit on windows7 64bit, but i didnt find a 64-bit version on the apachefriends site

it's quite discouraging in the end. im gonna try one last day and shift to CakePHP just like everyone else

So on one of my partner portals where I'm supposed to build a top-notch super extra de-la-mort-qui-tue mega portal, well there are threads where I decided to give this opportunity to users NOT to necessarily register on ZAP to post something..

Finally as you can see on my blog, well there are certain stupid idiots spammers (I think I might know them as well, but I'll remain mum..) who keep on spamming on threads, with links to porn sites and sites with low page ranking

Well...

That sucks ..

I guess you still have to remain harsh and force users to register even if the portal is not yet ready for not even an alpha launch :(

Too BAd !!!

That is the one of the first steps in starting to learn the Zend Framework. Unfortunately, there are various issues that have to be 'overcomed' when we start Zend Framework..

This is one of the issues on which I've got trapped for a while and I wanted to keep this as a reference for myself, lazy as I am :)

But I decided to add this paragraph just in case some readers got this 'oO' feeling of 'what's he writing?'

:D ..

By the way, I've read quite a lot on PHP frameworks and on how beginners and designers-wannabe-programmers get discouraged on Zend framework (and on Symfony too, I got discouraged as well..)

Many I read abandoned the quest of being programmatically independant from php frameworks that relate to Zend and Symfony. On the other hand, they got a lot happier with Joomla. Drupal (which is not a content management system, it's rather a CMS with a framework interface at the backend, like a mélange..) and CakePHP

I'm nearly discouraged as well but I still want to try learning the Zend framework, it's very hard for a designer but still I want to be able to get through it and take on a heavy vacation after I finish mastering it !!

I dont hope, I simply know I can make it..

No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they are new, they all seem to get slower over time. That state-of-the-art PC you bought last year might not feel like such a screamer after you install a dozen programs, load it with antispyware and antivirus tools, and download untold amounts of junk from the Internet.

The slowdown might happen so gradually you hardly notice it, until one day you’re trying to open a program or file and wonder, "What happened to my poor PC?"

Some very important things to note while building a website in flash (or not) with flash splash screens and flash intros..

Nowadays I think, I agree with those who advise it too, that flash intros should be sort of banned. A good thing would be to have it included in top menu and top headers, which internally contains a top menu and a search bar with autocomplete fields for instance.

But on a sideline, there are many other ways to make a flash intro constructive, such as language options, presentational purposes and a host of other valid reasons..

This article is quite interesting for flash animators and web developers alike...

There is no other way other than abide by the boss' rules. In fact, it's the very first place that you become instigated by political behaviour and the roots of diplomacy: hypocrisy..

so i have a complete list of 4000 houses, with their complete details in excel format, which, given their postal codes, i have to look for their locations and insert the latitudes and longitudes on Google Earth (their approximate values, based on my common sense, visually speaking ifever i come across an empty plot of land) back in the excel sheet. after that i shall then convert all this info into an xml sheet which i shall then deliver to my programmer for inserting in his flash application

thing is i managed to create and generate the xml sheet from the excel sheet, which was not easy, since there were loads of special characters (everything was in french, you can imagine the apostrophes and the special characters) and hard to convert to csv for importing via phpmyadmin.. but i did it ! a designer did programming finally !

however i still have to insert the longitudes and latitudes for 4000 houses on my sheet
im already starting it, cos my boss wants to see results :( for 4000 items, with all the searching and all the xml (nyehehe, the xml saved me time ^^), it will take me around 10000minutes which rounds up to approx 200hours, a month approx

is there any automated way or some way that can facilitate this hideous task ?

thanks to revert

ps: for those wanting to know how i managed the xls xml conversion with the special characters and the french accents taking care not to mess up the utf formats etc... email me :)

I found this article quite interesting and I have a theory about this. If ever I've hurt someone here, please don't get me wrong, it's just a theory

And So I Say: I believe there's a hierarchy...
software designer > software developer > software programmer > software coder

Once you have the idea to design based on the requirements specifications sheet brought in by the analyst (navigation and menus, content types, data flow diagram, gantt chart, state transition diagram, the environment, the PL to be used, online or offline, etc...), the major design tasks consisting of the ERD diagram (database design), the architecture of the software, design the components, NOW development comes into play: high level coding, pseudo codes, etc...

The programmer I believe will engage in constructing what the developer has prepared on a high level strategy; the developer lays the program that the programmer will now build and make it real. HE's the one who'll bring theory into reality.

You can also call them masons, essentials for ages if you take it as an analogy. For centuries and thousands of years, masons have constructed temples, towers like Babylon's Tower (which was where freemasons were believed to originate / start) Now, with the Internet Age, masons have become programmers :)

Programmers build programs created by the Developer / Architect. Just like masons, they will be given orders and they have to respect everything that they have been given, meticulously building the blocks, one by one until they finish the program... then move on to the next program, which could lie in Testing, but still a program...

I read some articles that say a developer can easily be a programmer.. NOT necessarily; these are two different fields: high level programming and low level programming; you cannot just make assumptions. In a race, programmers are the horses while the developers are the riders. Both are important to make it complete

That's why a carriage can never consist of more drivers than the horses
Can you imagine? Tooo many cooks would spoil the broth

Now to coders. I believe coders to be the mystery, the oblivious that heavily concentrate on codes, to make them better for instance. They might be the programmers' rivals but not necessarily... Like the words say, codes are to coders what programs are to programmers, right ?

Whilst programmers build the programs that they have been given to build, coders construct the codes that they will be given to build. A program consist of a series of lines of codes meant to do something. To make the codes better, stronger and more effective and efficient, coders come into play to make this happen.

If, For-While, Loops, Constructs would be what coders would concentrate on, whereas Make an entry in the database or converting a series of images into another format would be what programmers would be focussed on doing

I believe that's it !

Still I find it confusing though...
the difference between a programmer and a coder :( :(

in reference to: What is the difference between a coder and a programmer? - Quora (view on Google Sidewiki)

This is a one rare article I found it pleasing to read: the light english and the unbelievable truth about the difference between a programmer and a software developer. Those two jobs differ in so many ways. In many under-developed countries, people have this tendency to combine the two posts into one, thinking they are the same thing

Once you finish reading this article, you will not think the same way as traditional laymen or young geeks who would say to you in an interview: I just finished school and I have one year's experience as a software developer !

"Without being a programmer first?" you'd ask
"No!"

Ignorance is really a bliss !

To become a good developer, a Software Engineer or Computer Science major (or anyone else) must accept that they know very little about the day to day work that they have been hired to do.

They must strive to continue to learn every day and actually listen to the men and women around them who have been doing this work for eight or ten years. Eventually you will become a good programmer, and if you keep learning, you will become a good Software Developer.

Only when you arrive at that level of knowledge will you realize how little you knew as a green recruit.

Apple’s campaign to make native mobile apps seem sexier than the temperamental world of the mobile browser has been very successful. Tens of thousands of developers have been lured to the company’s App Store as a result.

Sencha offers built-in support for the geolocation API and the offline storage API, and takes advantage of CSS 3 for smaller, image-less design elements. Because all the major mobile platforms — iOS, Android and WebOS — use similar WebKit-based browsers, there’s little to worry about when it comes to support for cutting edge features like HTML5 and CSS 3. Even when Firefox arrives on mobiles, you should expect support to be on par.

Sencha has some demos available if you’d like to see what’s possible. The GeoCongress demo makes use of the geolocation API to find out where you are and then show a list of your senators and representative. There’s also a very slick Solitaire demo that shows how to preserve an app’s state using the HTML5 local storage API.

The Sencha Touch code is available under a GPLv3 license. If you’d like to experiment with the code, head over to the new Sencha Touch site and grab a copy.

If Sencha Touch doesn’t cover all your bases, there are several other frameworks out there that do similar things. Although not specifically geared to mobile-web apps, SproutCore can be used to create lightning-fast mobile-web apps.

One of the best books I’ve read so far, featuring the worst times in America, blessed by John Steinbeck’s magical narrative and descriptive way of screaming out heartless infernal pain in silence, since when we read, we read in silence :)

I was 16, fond of internet and I never liked reading books, but with the Grapes of Wrath, it was different. I found this in my father’s bookshelves. Trust me, I’ve read it with tears in my ears in the end and I trust everyone with a heart will as well; for instance, the last paragraphs talked about a man dying of hunger and what a woman had to do to stop him from dying..

The multimedia profile on the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, contributed by Maeve Grant, really is impressive and contains images from all parts of America that pertains to each and every chapter of the book. From Oklahoma to Winchester rifles, she took great care in assembling the pictures, displaying them with descriptive paragraphs of what the pictures mean and, on some occasions, how it comes into play in the book. From my perspective, it’s nearly a multimedia profile combining the literature of that masterpiece, notwithstanding how she neatly classifies it by chapters. Now that IS impressively patient !!

That first day…

The first day of learning guitar will be, for some students, an exciting journey of knowing the magic of playing a tune, whilst for others, it’ll be a black eye two hours of obstacles and wanting to give up banging the guitar on the edge of your wall HAHAHA

That was not funny, cos it’s quite an investment nowadays, a good guitar; it might cost around Rs. 5000 (MUR) a good Yamaha, Taurus is not bad either (you just have to tune the Taurus every day before you play it, so enter the electric guitar tuner – there’ the manual one too, depends on you)

You get good guitars at Venpin Rose-Hill and Columbia at Quatre-Bornes; I recommend this to all of my students: the rest I don’t know. When it comes to me, in terms of quality and affordability, these two are the best places for buying a good guitar to start learning.

There are quite a substantial number of songs where the meanings of their lyrics interprete pain, war, corruption, crime, and other themes

If you have to understand the meaning of each and every lyrics in songs, especially those from the 70s, you learn quite a lot about stuffs like war, crime, people's states of mind
